RESILIENT AT-RISK STUDENTS IN THE INNER-CITY
Abstract
ABSTRACT. Many at-risk students overcome their social and personal disadvantage. Such students are referred to as resilient and are understood as being characterized by protective or compensatory factors. Thirry-eight principals and teachers in inner-city schools were asked to reflect on their personal and professional experiences with at-risk students who demonsrrate resiliency. These principals and teachers identified a broad range of compensatory factors including: human relationships, student characteristics, family factors, community factors, and school factors. Based on these experiential data, a model of compensatory factor influence on at-risk student resiliency is proposed. Downloads
