This talk was given as a keynote speech at the Narrative Matters Conference 2004, on May 21st, 2004. A section of the talk was also broadcast on the radio program “Ideas᾿ (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) on Tuesday, January 4, 2005. LE DILEMME DES RÉDACTEURS DE MÉMOIRES Cette allocution était le discours-programme prononcé dans le cadre de la conférence « Narrative Matters » donnée le 21 mai 2004. Une partie de cette allocution a également été diffusée à l’émission « Ideas » à la radio (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) du mardi 4 janvier 2005.

Sharon Butala, Author

Author of fifteen books of fiction and nonfiction. She has spent her life in Saskatchewan, the last thirty years on her husband's family ranch in the southwest of the province, a ranch now owned by the Nature Conservancy of Canada and called Old man On His Back Prairie Heritage and Conservation Area. She won the Marian Engel award for her work in 1998, in 2002 she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada, and has received two honourary doctorates. Her latest book is "Lilac moon: Dreaming of the real West," in an attempt to answer the question, "What makes a Westerner?"
