COMPUTERS AND WRITING: A THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVE

Résumé

This article describes three current ways in which computer technology is applied to composition instruction. The first approach uses drill and practice programs to teach grammar. Another application is to guide students through various steps in the composing process using writing assistance tutorials. Word processing programs, used as a tool in fostering composition and combined with the talents of a knowledgeable teacher, are the final application. A major goal of this article is to describe the explicit or implicit theory underlying each instructional approach. RÉSUMÉ Cet article expose trois moyens actuels d'application de la technologie informatique à l'enseignement de la composition. La première méthode est axée sur des programmes d'exercices visant a enseigner la grammaire. Une autre méthode consiste à orienter les étudiants à travers diverses étapes du processus de composition à l'aide de leçons particulières d'écriture. Les programmes informatiques utilisés comme outils d'enseignement de la composition et combinés aux talents d'un professeur chevronné constituent l'application finale. L'un des principaux objectifs de cet article est de décrire la théorie explicite ou implicite qui sous-tend chacune de ces méthodes d'enseignement.
