DELVING INTO INQUIRY LEARNING IN TEACHER EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA

Abstract

This paper discusses a series of inquiry-based seminars that are central to the teacher education program at the University of British Columbia. This teacher education program reflects the changing curriculum in the province. The new inquiry-based provincial curriculum is being implemented between 2015 and 2018 and the teacher education program is changing to reflect the practical needs of the teacher candidates. As teacher candidates become more familiar with the practices of inquiry, their professional practice changes as well. 

EXPLORER L’APPRENTISSAGE PAR ENQUÊTE DANS LA FORMATION DES MAITRES À L’UNIVERSITÉ DE LA COLOMBIE-BRITANNIQUE 

Cet article s’intéresse à une série de séminaires portant sur l’apprentissage par enquête et au coeur du programme de formation des maitres à l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique. Ce programme de formation des maitres illustre les changements de programme en cours dans cette province. Le nouveau programme provincial basé sur l’apprentissage par enquête est mis en oeuvre entre 2015 et 2018. Par conséquent, le programme de formation des maitres est adapté afin de répondre aux besoins concrets des futurs enseignants. À mesure que les futurs enseignants seront familiers avec les pratiques d’apprentissage par enquête, ils modifieront leur pratique enseignante.

Claire Rushton, University of British Columbia

CLAIRE RUSHTON is Director of the Teacher Education Office at the University of British Columbia. She has spent over 30 years as a classroom teacher, school administrator, and teacher educator. She received a Masters in Education in Curriculum Studies and in Counselling Psychology from the University of British Columbia. claire.rushton@ubc.ca

CLAIRE RUSHTON est directrice du Teacher Education Office de l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique. Pendant plus de 30 ans, elle a oeuvré comme enseignante, administrative scolaire et formatrice pour de futurs enseignants. Elle a obtenu un diplôme de maitrise en Education in Curriculum Studies et en Counselling Psychology à l’University of British Columbia. claire.rushton@ubc.ca

Andrea S Webb, University of British Columbia

ANDREA S WEBB is a Lecturer in social studies education at the University of British Columbia. She spent almost a decade as a classroom teacher and department head in social studies and English before returning to higher education as a teacher educator. Andrea received her Ph.D. in Curriculum Studies and her research interests lie in teaching and learning in higher education. andrea.webb@ubc.ca

ANDREA S WEBB est chargée de cours en enseignement des sciences sociales à l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique. Avant de se consacrer à la formation des maitres au niveau universitaire, elle a enseigné et dirigé le département de sciences sociales et d’anglais pendant près d’une décennie. Andrea a reçu son diplôme de doctorat en Curriculum Studies. Comme chercheur, elle s’intéresse à l’enseignement et l’apprentissage en éducation supérieure. andrea.webb@ubc.ca
