THE SEAHORSE SOCIETY

Résumé

When a paper for a conference on "Women" tums up with a name like "The Seahorse Society," it is probably more necessary than usual that the author should offer some explanation of her paper's title. Well, it is really very simple, very obvious: I want to think about formal education and sexism and acculturation, about the adjustment of individuals to the imperatives of social tradition and biological nature, about conformity and imagination; and what I want us to realize is that there are dozens of different ways to do things, that we are missing the boat if we think we are following nature and if we have never considered the seahorse.
