Abstract

This article looks at the theory and practice of critical education, situating this within its philosophical context and exploring the contribution it makes to the understanding of the structures, curricula, culture, and pedagogy of schooling. The author concludes by drawing on the work of Habermas to examine possibilities and constraints in the attempt to develop a truly democratic and dialogic educational practice. RÉSUMÉ Dans cet article, l'auteur analyse la théorie et la pratique de l'éducation critique, la situant dans son contexte philosophique et s'interrogeant sur sa contribution à la compréhension des structures, des programmes, de la culture et de la pédagogie scolaires. L'auteur s'inspire des oeuvres de Habermas pour étudier les possibilités et les limites qui s'opposent au développement d'un enseignement véritablement démocratique et fondé sur le dialogue.

Author Biography

Ronald G. Sultanan, University of Malta

Ronald G. Sultana is a lecturer in the sociology of education at the University of Malta. He carried out his postgraduate studies at the University of Reading (UK) and the University of Waikato (New Zealand). He has published widely on the political economy of education and his current research interest is in the politics of vocational education. He was a Fulbrigbt Visiting Scholar at Stanford University in 1990, and his manuscript Schools and the Ideological Construction of Workers will be published by the New Zealand Institute of Industrial Relations later this year. Ronald G. Sultana est chargé de cours de sociologie de l'éducation à l'Université de Malte. Il a fait ses études supérieures à l'Université de Reading (R.U.) et à l'Université de Waikato (Nouvelle-Zélande). Il a abondamment publié sur l'économie politique de l'éducation et ses projets de recherche en cours ont trait à la politique de l'enseignement professionnel. Il a été chercheur invité Fulbright à l'Université de Stanford en 1990. Son manuscrit "Schools and the Ideological Construction of Workers" sera publié par le New Zealand Institute of Industrial Relations ultérieurement cette année.
