UNDERSTANDING AND REACHING ADULT LEARNERS

Abstract

Advisors, faculty, administrators who work with adult learners need to understand them. This understanding incorporates learning capacity, learning styles, readiness to learn, and participation in learning. Advisors, faculty, and administrators use this knowledge base to 1) increase their advising repertoire, 2) change the climate in their classrooms, and 3) make adult students feel they matter. RÉSUMÉ Les conseillers, enseignants et administrateurs qui travaillent avec des étudiants d'âge adulte se doivent de les comprendre. Pour cela, il faut qu'ils soient en mesure d'évaluer leur capacité et leurs modes d'apprentissage. Conseillers, enseignants et administrateurs peuvent alors mettre à profit cette somme de connaissances pour 1) étoffer leur répertoire, 2) modifier le climat qui règne en classe et 3) donner à ces étudiants l'impression qu'ils comptent vraiment.

Author Biography

Nancy K. Schlossberg, University of Maryland

Nancy K. Schlossberg received her higher education at Barnard College and, Teachers College, Columbia University. Since 1974 she bas been a full professor at the University of Maryland. She was the first woman executive at the American Council on Education where she established the Office of Women in Higher Education. Dr. Schlossberg's major interests and expertise are in the field of adult development, adult psychology, and career development. Her most recent book is Counseling Adults in Transition. Dr. Schlossberg is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA), and the 1983 APA G. Stanley Hall Lecturer on Adult Development. She has served as member and chair of APA's Public Information Committee, and she was selected as a Distinguished Scholar at the University of Maryland in 1983. Nancy K. Schlossberg a fait ses études au Barnard et à Teachers College de l'université Columbia. Depuis 1974, elle est professeur titulaire à l'université de Maryland. Elle a été la première femme à accéder à un poste de cadre supérieur au sein de l'American Council on Education, où elle a créé l'Office of Women in Higher Education. Ses principaux intérêts et sa spécialisation sont dans le domaine du développement de l'éducation des adultes, de la psychologie des adultes et du perfectionnement professionnel. Son ouvrage le plus récent s'intitule Counselling Adults in Transition. Nancy Schlossberg est membre de l'American Psychological Association (APA), et c'est elle qui en 1983 a été la conférencière G.Stanley Hall sur le développement des adultes.
