SAFETY FIRST: THE ROLE OF TRUST AND SCHOOL SAFETY IN NON-SUICIDAL SELF-INJURY

Abstract

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has become very prominent among adolescents in middle and high school settings. However, little research has evaluated the role of the school environment in the behaviour. This study examined whether indices of school trust and perceived safety were predictive of NSSI behaviour. Results indicate that these variables allow us to more accurately identify participants who engage in NSSI. Students who report being bullied and threatened, and who have less trust in specific members of school staff are more likely to engage in NSSI.

LA SÉCURITÉ D'ABORD : LE RÔLE DE CONFIANCE ET DE LA PERCEPTION DE SÉCURITÉ À L'ÉCOLE SUR L'AUTOMUTILATION NON-SUICIDAIRE

L'automutilation non-suicidaire (AMNS) est devenue un comportement très important parmi les adolescents en milieu scolaire. Cependant, peu de recherches ont évalué le rôle de l'environnement scolaire dans le comportement. Cette étude examine si les indices de confiance et de la perception de sécurité à l'école sont des facteurs prédictifs de l'AMNS. Les résultats indiquent que ces variables nous permettent d'identifier plus précisément les participants qui endossent l'AMNS. Les étudiants qui déclarent être victimes d'intimidation et de menace, et qui ont moins confiance en certains membres du personnel scolaire sont plus susceptibles de dire qu’ils s’engagent dans l'AMNS.

Rick Nelson Noble, McGill University

Rick N. Noble is a doctoral student in the department of Educational and Counselling Psychology at McGill University. His research focuses on emotional resilience in adolescents, and non-suicidal self-injury.

Rick N. Noble est doctorant au Département de psychopédagogie et de psychologie du counseling de l’Université McGill. Il oriente ses recherches sur la résilience émotionnelle des adolescents et sur l’automutilation non suicidaire.

Michael J. Sornberger

Michael J. Sornberger is a doctoral student in the department of Educational and Counselling Psychology at McGill University. His research interests include non-suicidal self-injury, gender, and emotional difficulties.

Michael J. Sornberger est doctorant au Département de psychopédagogie et de psychologie du counseling de l’Université McGill. Ses intérêts de recherche englobent l’automutilation non suicidaire, le gender et les difficultés émotionnelles.

Jessica R. Toste

Jessica R. Toste is currently a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Special Education at Vanderbilt University, Peabody College and an adjunct professor in the Department of Educational & Counselling Psychology at McGill University. Her research interests are focused on resilience factors related to school success of youth at-risk.

Jessica R. Toste poursuit présentement des études postdoctorales au Department of Special Education du Vanderbilt University (Peabody College). Elle est également professeur associée au Département de psychopédagogie et de psychologie du counseling de l’Université McGill. Elle s’intéresse de façon particulière aux facteurs de résilience liés au succès scolaire des jeunes à risque.

Nancy L. Heath

Nancy L. Heath is a James McGill Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology at McGill University in the Human Development and School/Applied Child Psychology programs. Dr. Heath’s research program explores resilience and adaptive functioning in youth at-risk. Her most recent work focuses on non-suicidal self-injury in schools.

Nancy L. Heath est titulaire d’une chaire James McGill et est à la tête des programmes en psychologie pour enfants et de l’école de développement humain au Département de psychopédagogie et de psychologie du counseling de l’Université McGill. Les programmes de recherche du professeur Heath explorent les mécanismes de résilience et d’adaptation des jeunes à risque. Ses travaux les plus récents portaient sur l’automutilation non suicidaire en milieu scolaire.

Rusty McLouth

Rusty McLouth is a research associate at the American Academy of Family Physicians, and adjunct faculty at Avila University. He has also owned McLouth Research and Consulting.
