The effects of developmental co-teaching on education trainees: A literature review

Abstract

This article provides a systematic review of the literature on developmental co-teaching. Developmental co-teaching appears as an alternative practice to traditional internships wishing to better meet the current needs of the community. Developmental co-teaching involves two trainees teaching the same group of students or one trainee and the classroom teacher. The main results show that the two models of developmental co-teaching contribute to improving the initial training of trainees both during the internship and in the longer term in their professional practice. These contributions include, among other things, the development of a collaborative and reflective vision of the profession as well as the development of the professional identity of the learner, a vision that traditional internships cannot provide.

Mélissa Fortier, Centre de Services Scolaires de la Riveraine

is a remedial teacher at thecRiveraine school service center in the Centre-du-Québec region. She completed a bachelor's degree in preschool and primary education (BÉPEP) from 2015 to 2019, then a master's degree in educational psychology: learning and adaptation difficulties from 2019 to 2021. During her training, she was able to experiment with developmental co-teaching and deepen her knowledge on this subject thanks to Philippe Tremblay, her master's director. fortierme@cssdlr.gouv.qc.ca

Philippe Tremblay, Université Laval

Full professor in the Department of Studies on Teaching and Learning at l’Université Laval in Quebec, Philippe Tremblay worked for several years in Belgium as a primary school teacher in ordinary and specialized education before becoming a researcher at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium). His work focuses on the analysis and evaluation of systems intended for students with special needs and collaboration between teachers (co-teaching). Philippe.tremblay@fse.ulaval.ca
