CREATING PROGRAMS FOR SAFE SCHOOLS: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES IN RELATION TO GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN SOUTH AFRICA
Abstract
ABSTRACT. In this article we describe some of the strategies and initiatives within Departments of Education in South Africa to change attitudes and behaviours around gender-based violence and harassment and bring about systemic change. We look specifically at the role of the National Department of Education (NDoE), teachers, learners, and school policy. The areas selected reflect the work and interests of the National Department of Education's Gender Equity Directorate and the gender focal persons in three provincial Departments of Education: Free State, Oauteng, and Mpumalanga. Downloads
