HUMAN RIGHTS: IS CANADIAN SCHOOLING A PRIVILEGE, A RIGHT, OR AN OBLIGATION?
Abstract
The fortieth anniversary of the approval by the United Nations of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was observed in 1988. The spirit of this document is reflected in various Canadian and provincial legislation and in numerous school programs. Some principles for promoting human rights through schooling are weil entrenched in Canadian traditions, but the process does not stop at a particular year. Selected recent key achievements (some of which are still controversial) are mentioned as a prelude to some speculation about priority items for the near future. RÉSUMÉ Le quarantième anniversaire de la signature de la Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme par les Nations unies a éte célébré en 1988. L'esprit de ce document se reflète dans divers textes législatifs canadiens et provinciaux et dans de nombreux programmes scolaires. Certains principes de la promotion des droits de l'homme par l'éducation sont solidement ancrés dans la tradition canadienne. Certaines évaluations récentes (dont plusieurs sont encore controversées) servent de prélude à des spéculations sur les dossiers prioritaires à venir.Downloads
