THE PUBLIC SCHOOL MYTH: QUEBEC EDUCATION 1875-1960
Abstract
This article argues that Quebec public education, as measured by conventional criteria, was more fiction than fact before 1960. Specifically, it is charged that those who ruled education were neither accountable to the public nor representative of it. In addition, it is alleged that public education was unaccommodating to immigrant and minority groups. RÉSUMÉ L'auteur de cet article soutient que le système d'éducation publique du Québec, mesuré selon les critères classiques, relevait plus de la fiction que de la réalité avant 1960. L'auteur affrrme notamment que les personnes qui régissaient ce système n'avaient aucun compte à rendre au public ni ne le représentaient. En outre, il semblerait que ce système d'éducation publique défavorisait les immigrants et les groupes minoritaires.Downloads
