SEEKING STRENGTH-BASED APPROACHES IN ABORIGINAL EDUCATION: THE "THREE STARS AND A WISH" PROJECT

Abstract

ABSTRACT. In a writing project, Aboriginal parents chose and told stories from their lives to their children, grade five students at an inner city school. The children recorded the stories, which were compiled in a book. At a public book launch, the authors read excerpts from their work. Themes from six stories are analyzed and discussed in relation to criteria that promote a strength-based approach to Aboriginal education. À LA RECHERCHE D'APPROCHES FORTES DANS L'ENSEIGNEMENT DES AUTOCHTONES: LE PROJET "TROIS ÉTOILES ET UN VOEU" RÉSUMÉ Pour un projet de production écrite, des parents autochtones ont choisi des histoires inspirées de leurs experiences. Ils les ont racontées à des enfants de 5ème année d'une école du centre-ville. Les enfants ont enregistré ces histoires et les ont rassemblées pour en constituer un livre. Lors du lancement public de ce livre, les auteurs en ont lu des extraits. Les thèmes de six histoires ont été analysés et sont présentés en fonction des critères favorisant une approche fondée sur les forces des apprenants autochtones.

Author Biographies

Herb Katz, University of Winnipeg

HERB KATZ, an Associate Professor of Education at the University of Winnipeg, earned a B.A. from Concordia (SGWU) University, Diploma in Education and M.A. from McGill University, and Ph.D. from the University of Alberta. He has taught and been a Reading Specialist in elementary and high schools in Quebec and Alberta. Before coming to Winnipeg, Dr. Katz was Acting Director of the Reading and language Centre in the Department of Clinical Services, Faculty of Education, University of Alberta. His current interests include the long-term effectiveness of early reading intervention programs, and the site-based model of reading teacher education. He is currently leading a variety of community-and school-based projects designed to develop the literacy skills of early, middle, and senior years Aboriginal students. HERB KATZ est professeur agrégé en éducation à l'Université de Winnipeg. Il a obtenu un B.A à l'Université Concordia (SGWU), un diplôme en éducation et une M.A à l'Université McGill ainsi qu'un Ph.D à l'Université d'Alberta. En tant que spécialiste, il a enseigné et a été un spécialste de la lecture dans les écoles primaires et secondaires au Québec et en Alberta. Avant d'arriver à Winnipeg, Herb Katz a été directeur par intérim du Centre de lecture et de langue du département des services cliniques de la faculté de l'éducation de l'Université d'Alberta. Ses intérêts de recherches actuels concernent l'efficacité à long terme des programmes d'interventions précoces en lecture et le modèle environnemental dans la formation des enseignants en lecture. Il dirige actuellement divers projets communautaires et scolaires visant au développement des compétences langagières des étudiants autochtones de tous âges.

Ken McCluskey, University of Winnipeg

KEN MCCLUSKEY earned his B.A. (Honours), M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in Psychology from the University of Manitoba. Now a Professor of Education at the University of Winnipeg, he has 25 years experience as a teacher, special educator, psychologist, and senior administrator in the public school system. A recipient of the Canadian Council of Exceptional Children's "Joan Kershaw Publications" award and the Reclaiming Children and Youth Journal's "Spotlight on Excellence" Award for his work with at-risk students, Dr. McCluskey has authored or co-authored more than 90 professional articles, chapters, or books. His work with Indian and Northem Affairs Canada and local bands has taken him to more than 50 Native communities and schools throughout Manitoba and other Canadian provinces. KEN MCCLUSKEY a obtenu un B.A (honours), une M.A, et un doctorat en psychologie à l'Université du Manitoba. Maintenant professeur en sciences de l'éducation à l'Université de Winnipeg, il cumule 25 années d'expérience comme enseignant, éducateur spécialisé, psychologue et administrateur principal à l'intérieur du système scolaire public. Récipiendaire du prix «Joan Kershaw publication» du Conseil canadien de l'enfance exceptionelle et du prix «Spotlight on Excellence» du périodique Reclaiming Children and Youth pour son travail sur les élèves à risque, Ken McCluskeya écrit ou co-écrit plus de 90 articles, chapitres ou livres. Son travail auprès des Affaires Indiennes et du Nord Canada ainsi qu'auprès des bandes régionales l'ont mené à travers plus de 50 communautés et établissements scolaires autochtones au Manitoba et dans d'autres provinces canadiennes.
