Illustrating his points in detail with short sequences of different styles of interaction between a student and a computer, George Krupnik demonstrates a number of crucial differences in potential between the programs now in existence. Some programs conduct language "learning", by monitoring the language a student has produced and applying to it the rules that have been expounded. Others, however, can support language "acquisition", that spontaneous and largely unconcious process by which thinking in another language is achieved - a development that aligns programming with the main principles of language learning now recognized to apply.
