Call for Applications - Assistant/Associate English Editor

2021-07-12

The McGill Journal of Education/Revue des sciences de l’éducation de McGill (MJE/RSEM) is seeking Assistant/Associate English Editors. Founded in 1966, the MJE is a leading Canadian bilingual scholarly journal with a longstanding commitment to manuscripts published in English and French. The journal is primarily supported through SSHRC’s Aid to Scholarly Journals program. Hosted in McGill’s Faculty of Education with an editorial collaboration from Université de Montréal and Université du Québec à Montréal, the MJE is an open access generalist journal that publishes three times a year on a broad range of topics related to education.

The Assistant/Associate English Editor/s will have the opportunity to work in close collaboration with the MJE editorial team as well as with the two Managing Editors, Marianne Filion and Catherine Bienvenu. The Assistant/Associate Editors will share responsibility with the English editors (Professors Strong-Wilson, Asghar, and Zanazanian) for manuscripts submitted in English, working closely with, and being mentored by, Dr Strong-Wilson. The Editors will also be an integral part of the editorial team, involved in shaping the overall intellectual direction of the journal and encouraging submissions nationally and internationally. Bilingualism (English and French), though not a requirement, would be a definite asset.

The tasks of the Editor include the following:

  • Assigning reviewers to a manuscript;
  • Issuing publication decisions based on reviewer evaluations;
  • Communicating with authors and reviewers;
  • Undertaking a close reading of manuscripts prior to publication.

The Editors may also be involved in organizing special issues and/or mini-special issues. The Editors will be actively engaged in outreach, encouraging authors to submit manuscripts to the journal; consulting with, as well as recommending international editorial board members; promoting the journal widely within the scholarly community as well as within educational communities; and contributing to SSHRC applications (e.g., SSHRC’s Aid for Scholarly Journals).

The journal is looking for applicants willing to commit to at least a two- to three-year editorship. The individuals should be fully proficient in the English language (spoken; read; written). This position would be ideal for a tenured or tenure-track or assistant professor looking to expand their academic network, to learn about the rapidly advancing world of journal publishing, and to work as part of a bilingual inter-university editorial team or for a doctoral student nearing completion of their studies.

Kindly include a resumé and cover letter addressed to Editor-in-Chief Teresa Strong-Wilson in your application, and send it electronically to the Managing Editors (mje.education@mcgill.ca) by August 15, 2021.
