THE CYCLE OF CHILD ABUSE: IMPLICATIONS FOR EDUCATORS
Abstract
The year 1985 has been designated as the "International Year of the Youth". It is particularly appropriate during this time to examine all aspects of childhood - even one so horrible as child abuse. This tragedy bas been a part of the human condition for ages. Evidence suggests that the incidence of child abuse is on the rise and that child abuse is self-perpetuating. An abused child often grows up to become the abusing adult. Programs have been developed that seem to be having a positive effect on reducing this human tragedy. In addition, we must become better informed about this problem: its history, its dimensions in the community, and the efforts to protect children and rehabilitate adults. As educators, we must be aware of the measures that we can take to help eradicate this awful condition. RÉSUMÉ L'année 1985 a été désignée comme l'Année internationale de la Jeunesse. Il semble donc tout particulièrement opportun d'examiner en cette année tous les aspects de l'enface, notamment les enfants qui sont victimes de sévices. Ce fléau affecte la condition humaine depuis des siècles. Tout donne à penser que l'incidence des enfants qui sont victimes de sévices est à la hausse et que ce fléau se perpétue de lui-même. Un enfant victime de sévices grandit souvent pour devenir à son tour le bourreau d'autres enfants. Des programmes ont été mis sur pied qui semblent permettre de réduire cette tragédie humaine. En tant qu'éducateurs, nous nous devons de mieux connaître ce problème: son histoire, ses dimensions au sein de la communauté, et les efforts déployés pour protéger les enfants et réhabiliter les adultes. En tant qu'éducateurs, nous devons connaître les mesures que nous pouvons prendre pour venir à bout de ce fléau.Downloads
