AUGMENTATIVE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS: COMMUNICATING WITH THE NON-VOCAL HANDICAPPED - PART 1
Abstract
Individual development is briefly outlined as the interdependent development of five skill areas: language, cognition, social, perceptual-motor, and psycho-spiritual / moral. In the context of this model augmentative communication systems for non-vocal severe1y handicapped people are reviewed. Symbol definition, prerequisite skills, and sorne criteria for the selection of an appropriate symbol system are discussed. There is also a review of representational, abstract, and symbolic language code systems for non-vocal severe1y handicapped people. (Editor's note: This article is part one of a two-part series. Part II will appear in the Spring 1985 issue.) RÉSUMÉ Le développement personnel est brièvement présenté comme le développement inter-dépendant de cinq aptitudes: linguistiques, cognitives, sociales, perceptuelles-motrices et psychospirituelles / morales. Dans le cadre de ce modèle, des sysoemes de communication augmentatifs à l'intention des muets gravement handicapés sont examinés. La définition des symboles, les facultés requises et certains critères servant à sélectionner un sysoeme de symboles adéquat sont absordés. On examine également les systèmes de code linguistique représentatif, abstrait et symbolique pour les muets gravement handicapés.Downloads
